I Keep Getting “Send Me This Post” Comments on Instagram — Here’s What I Discovered
Have you noticed those comments on Instagram that simply say: “Send me this post.” I have. Actually, I've been seeing them on my posts more and more lately, and at first I didn't think much of it. I figured someone liked something I posted and wanted to share it with a friend. But after seeing the same type of comment repeatedly and sometimes from accounts I didn't recognize, I started wondering: “What's really going on here?” So I did a little digging.
Is “Send Me This Post” Actually a Scam?
Here's the important part: the words themselves don't automatically mean it's a scam. Someone really could see your recipe, article, video, or picture and want you to send it to them. The problem is that scammers and spam accounts can use innocent-sounding comments to get people to engage with them. And that's where things can get interesting.
A stranger may comment: “Send me this post.” You respond by sending it. Then you get a message from them. Maybe they want to promote your account. Maybe they tell you they can make your post go viral. Maybe they offer to feature your content to their followers. Or maybe they eventually send you a link. That's when my warning bells start going off.
🚩 The Comments That Made Me Suspicious
What caught my attention wasn't just one comment. It was seeing very similar comments over and over. Different accounts. Different posts. But basically the same message. And when you're creating content, especially if you're trying to grow a website or social media following, these comments can be tempting. You think: “Hey, somebody likes my post!” And who doesn't like that? But I've learned that it's worth looking at the account before jumping into a conversation.
Look at the Account Before You Respond
If somebody you've never heard of suddenly asks you to send them your post, take a quick look at their profile.
Ask yourself:
- Does this look like a real person?
- Does the account have genuine conversations in the comments?
- Are the followers and engagement believable?
- Is the account constantly promoting other people's content?
- Does it look like a business offering social media promotion?
- Are there strange links in the profile?
- Do their posts look copied or automated?
None of these things by themselves proves an account is a scam. But several red flags together should make you stop and think.
The “We'll Make You Go Viral” Pitch
One thing I've become particularly cautious about is the sudden offer to promote my content. You may get a message saying something like: “We can promote your post to thousands of people!” Or: “We'll help your account go viral!”
That can sound wonderful when you're working hard to build an audience. But before paying anyone, do your homework. A large follower count doesn't necessarily mean an account has a valuable audience. And if someone promises guaranteed followers, guaranteed viral views, or unbelievable results, I'd be very careful.
Then There's the Really Dangerous Part
The biggest concern isn't someone simply asking you to send them a post. It's when the conversation turns into: “Click this link.” Or: “Verify your Instagram account here.” Or: “Your account has been reported. Click here to prevent suspension.” That's a completely different situation. Phishing scams can use fear and urgency to convince you to enter your Instagram username and password on a fake website. Once scammers have that information, they may be able to take over your account. So if someone sends you a suspicious link, don't click it just because they claim to be helping you.
Don't Give Anyone Your Security Code
This one is especially important.
Never give a stranger your:
- Instagram password
- Two-factor authentication code
- Backup/recovery codes
- Email password
- Credit card information
- Banking information
A legitimate person helping you with your Instagram account should not need your password or security codes. If someone asks for them, stop communicating with them.
What If You Already Sent Them the Post?
If you've already responded to one of these comments, don't panic. If all you did was send them your Instagram post using Instagram's normal sharing feature, that doesn't mean they've hacked your account. Just be cautious about what happens next. If they start asking you to click links, pay money, provide account information, or send security codes, that's your cue to walk away. If you entered your password into a suspicious website, change your password immediately and review your account's security and login activity. It's also a good idea to make sure two-factor authentication is turned on.
So What Am I Doing Now?
Honestly? I'm paying more attention. I'm not automatically assuming every “Send me this post” comment is a scam. But I'm also not automatically trusting it. If I don't recognize the account, I'll look at the profile first. If something doesn't look right, I can simply ignore the comment. And if the account becomes pushy or sends suspicious links, I'll block and report it.
Sometimes Ignoring It Is the Best Response
One thing social media has taught me is that you don't have to respond to everyone who contacts you. You don't owe a stranger a response just because they commented on your post. You don't have to accept every offer to promote your content. And you definitely don't have to click a link because someone says your account is in trouble. If something feels off, listen to that little voice in your head.
Stop. Look. Think before you click.
